US vows to kill new al-Qaeda chief

The United States has vowed to hunt down and kill new al-Qaeda "emir" Ayman al-Zawahiri like it did in the case of his predecessor Osama bin Laden.

"He (Zawahiri) and his organisation still threaten us. As we did both seek to capture and kill and succeed in killing bin Laden, we certainly do or will do the same thing with Zawahiri," Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at a Pentagon news conference.

Mullen on Thursday said he was not surprised by the news reports that Zawahiri, who is carrying a USD 25 million reward on his head, has succeeded bin Laden.

Al-Qaeda has named al-Zawahiri as its new chief following the killing of long-time leader bin Laden by US commandos in May 2 raid in Pakistan.

In his last press conference as the Secretary of Defense, Gates said he is not sure it's a position anybody should aspire to be the al-Qaeda chief, under the circumstances.

"Bin Laden has been the leader of al-Qaeda, essentially since its inception. In that particular context, he had a peculiar charisma that I think Zawahiri does not have. I think he was much more operationally engaged than we have the sense Zawahiri has been," he said.

"We should be mindful that this announcement by al-Qaeda reminds us that, despite having suffered a huge loss with the killing of bin Laden -- and a number of others -- al-Qaeda seeks to perpetuate itself, seeks to find replacements for those who have been killed, and remains committed to the agenda that bin Laden put before them," Gates said.

M.F. Hussain lived forever

The world mourns for him, so does Chennai. Although the great Indian artist of our times, M.F. Hussain, left us, he will be arround for ever. He was impressed by the soul stirring songs of legendary 'carnatic vocalist' M.S. Subbhulakshmi and painted her in his own colorful way. Under the portrait, he even signed his name in Tamil.

Sharan Apparao, who runs the famous Apparao gallery in Chennai, shares with The Sunday Indian her friendly ties with Hussain. She proudly remembers how Hussain made a portrait of her:

“We started our gallery in 1984 and one of the first shows featured the works of Hussain. I was young and naïve. I telephoned him and went to meet him. He was utterly warm and charming. In those days there was no craze for modern art like today. There was just a genuine love for any art activity those days. So he agreed and that was the beginning of my career as an art gallerist.

He was a fun loving person. In 1984 when I met him I had a moped. He asked me to take him on it. Needless to say I was surprised. Sensing that he said,"Yes come on, it will be like Hindi movies, they will think the father in law has run away with the daughter in law... let's go on mount road of chennai" he laughed. So there we were, zipping up and down the roads of Madras.

This incident will always personify the spontaneity and never say die attitude that was reflected right through his life. It is this openness and desire for LIFE and love of 'the new' that made him never grow old. It never ever occurred to me that he was old. His mind was always young and always open to new things. He was always ready for an experiment and he had a great sense of humor.

He spoke in a muffled tone, often words were lost and one has to strain to catch the nuances of his speech which often had some tongue-n-cheek comments. We spent many afternoons wandering around. And one day at 3 in the afternoon he said ''..Ok, I am hungry. Let's go to your house for lunch”. I knew my cook would growl at the time, so I called my mother and said, "I am bringing Husain home and we both have not had lunch". So she rustled up some aloo puri for us. While we were sitting around he said ''Ok get me some materials, let me do some drawings for you”.

He started doing large dramatic lines on canvas and just then the electricity went off, But he continued.. The heat of madras did not bother him; he just drew away till the Aloo puri came and when my mom came to call us to the table she found him sprawled on the carpet creating these works and he laughed and said..."See.... ! what a slave driver your daughter is!”

And since then the name has stuck with my mom and she often calls me a slave driver when I sound dominating.

The last time I saw him was in Bombay when I went to give him the auction catalog which had the red Bharat mata painting on the cover.M.F. Hussain lived forever
